What a household spends
The most useful single reference is Plusdin's September 2026 estimate for an intermediate standard of living: about R$ 4,500 up to R$ 6,500 monthly for one person, R$ 7,000 up to R$ 10,500 for a couple, R$ 10,000 to R$ 15,000 for a family of four with public school, and R$ 14,000 to R$ 22,000 or more with private school. Those cover rent, bills, food, transport, basic health and some leisure, and exclude debts. At the Banco Central rate used on this site, a couple's middle figure is about US$ 1,600. Owners without rent should take off the rent line and add the condominium fee, IPTU and a maintenance fund.
The biggest swing is location. The same article has a two-bedroom at R$ 2,100 to R$ 3,000 in Capoeiras and from R$ 4,500 up to R$ 9,000 or more at Jurerê, with Campeche at R$ 3,200 to R$ 5,200 and Lagoa da Conceição from R$ 3,500 up to R$ 6,000. FipeZAP's asking rent of R$ 61.19/m² in August means about R$ 3,670 for a 60 m² unit at the city average. Numbeo's contributors put a one-bedroom at about R$ 3,444 central and R$ 2,435 outside. By comparison, Curitiba and Porto Alegre have lower asking rents on FipeZAP, at R$ 49.44 and R$ 46.78 per square meter.
Plan on the cost of a car, too, since most of the island's neighborhoods depend on one. Gasoline ran about R$ 6.58 to R$ 6.64 a liter in late 2026.
Power, gas and a house built for summer
Celesc is the electricity company for the state, and bills rose in August 2026 when Aneel approved an average increase of 10.82%, or 9.26% for homes and small businesses. The residential tariff is about R$ 0.76/kWh before tax. One calculator's estimate with tax is about R$ 200 for 200 kWh and R$ 300 for 300 kWh. Speaking generally, air conditioning in January and February pushes a family's use up, electric showers and portable heaters do the same in July, when nights average 13°C, and few homes have central heating. Ask a seller for twelve months of bills, not just the last one, so you can see both ends of the year.
Water is simple until you ask about the sewer. Casan's example for April 2026 was a 7 m³ home paying R$ 135.80, split evenly between water and sewage charges. A home outside the network pays the water half and looks after its own septic tank. Keep a spare budget for the water tank too: the August and September 2026 main break left parts of the region short for days, and tanker trucks are part of Casan's summer plan.
Condominium fees matter more than utilities in most apartments. The city average was R$ 754 in January 2026, the highest of the southern capitals, per Loft. How to read the accounts is in the condominium fees guide.
Which hospitals a health plan sends you to
Most foreign residents who can afford it use private care. My Latin Life's expat guide, revised in October 2026, names Hospital Baía Sul, Imperial Hospital de Caridade and SOS Cárdio, and warns that English is thin beyond the leading private hospitals, with GP visits at about US$ 30 to US$ 55 and specialists at US$ 50 to US$ 90 for those paying cash. SOS Cárdio runs an emergency room open 24 hours on the SC-401.
Plan prices are hard to pin down, because most sellers quote by age and contract type. One comparison site's October 2026 table shows entry prices for Unimed Grande Florianópolis at R$ 175 and Bradesco Saúde at R$ 178, for business contracts of two or more people aged 0 to 18 with co-payment. It says those business contracts run up to 35% below individual plans, and most individual prices are only by quote. A working-age adult will pay far more than those starting points. Get a written quote for your age and check the network names the hospital nearest you, especially on the north or south coast. Living on the island, also consider the drive: a hospital 15 km away in January traffic is farther than it looks. Rules for foreign residents are in the residency guide.
School fees and domestic help
Local estimates for 2026 put private schools from R$ 1,500 up to R$ 3,500 a month for early elementary, R$ 2,500 to R$ 5,000 for high school, and from R$ 3,500 to about R$ 6,500 or more for bilingual or international tracks, with options on the mainland from about R$ 1,200. Add a yearly enrollment fee of about one month, R$ 600 to R$ 2,500 for materials and R$ 300 to R$ 800 for uniforms. Dual International School, the only one here on the August to June calendar, is estimated between R$ 4,000 and R$ 11,000 monthly. Numbeo's contributors put an international primary school at about R$ 55,600 a year.
Cleaning help is priced by the day. A June 2026 local price guide gives R$ 180 to R$ 260 in the center, R$ 190 to R$ 290 in Campeche and Ingleses, R$ 200 to R$ 300 in the Lagoa and R$ 230 to R$ 320 in Jurerê, where houses are bigger. Some charge R$ 20 to R$ 50 extra for travel. A worker on a monthly contract brings employer charges, which your accountant should explain.
What changes between January and July
The city runs on two calendars. For summer 2026/27 the city projects more than 2.3 million airport passengers, with peaks of 23,000 a day in January. Local government has frozen the Prato Manezinho, a fixed seafood plate kiosks must offer, at R$ 40 for a second year, to contain prices on the sand, and it checks kiosks daily. Guides say restaurants near Jurerê charge more in summer; ordinary bistro meals run R$ 70 to R$ 120 a person across the year on one 2026 guide. Hotel rates show the swing: a hotel blog in Jurerê quotes R$ 179 a night off-season and above R$ 700 in summer and on holidays. Short-let rents follow the same curve, with January the peak and May the low.
For residents, the cost is mostly time. The card fare on the bus is R$ 6.20 and a Pix or QR payment R$ 7.70, and cash stopped being accepted on board in January 2026. Summer also adds the school run and grocery trip through beach traffic. Renting from March to November may look cheap in a beach district, but check the contract's end date and the legal rules on seasonal leases in the rental guide. For the wider market, see the Florianópolis guide.
