Three households, one city
Add up the table above and a couple living in a two-bedroom apartment in the northern districts, without a car or a school bill, comes to about R$ 6,500 a month at the low end of each line, and about R$ 9,000 with more typical choices. A family in Boa Viagem with one car, two plans and a child at Escola Americana passes R$ 18,000. These totals are arithmetic done for this guide from the items listed, not a published survey. Numbeo's own rents, at R$ 2,902 for a one-bedroom center apartment and R$ 4,335.56 for three bedrooms, are in line with the listing medians in the table.
The biggest surprise for newcomers is rent. FipeZAP's September 2026 report has Recife's average at R$ 64.39 a square meter each month, second among state capitals after São Paulo, so the city is not cheap on housing, however low it looks on restaurant prices. A tenant usually pays condominium and IPTU on top of the rent, so ask for the total. The condominium fee guide explains what the bill covers, and it is worth seeing how Natal or Salvador compare when you are still picking a city.
Fees in the region also carry a hidden risk. uCondo's survey found 12.71% of condominium fees overdue in the Northeast during the first half of 2026, the second-highest level in Brazil, and paying owners end up covering the gap. Reading the accounts tells you more than the headline fee does.
Power, water and air-conditioning
Recife's climate means steady cooling rather than a summer spike. INMET's normals keep highs from 27.9°C to 31°C through the year, with lows above 20°C, so bedrooms use air-conditioning in most months. Neoenergia Pernambuco's rates rose an average of 3.41% for homes from 29 April 2026. As a general observation, west-facing and top-floor units run higher, and older apartments often lack the wiring for several modern units, so check the panel if you plan to add any.
Water deserves a real question. A planned shutdown of the Tapacurá supply system from 22 to 25 July 2026 cut 134 neighborhoods in Recife, Jaboatão and Camaragibe, including Boa Viagem, Pina, Espinheiro, Casa Forte and Aflitos. In September 2025 a valve failure at Alto do Céu put northern districts such as Aflitos, Espinheiro and Parnamirim on a temporary odd-and-even-day schedule. As a general observation, a building with big tanks barely notices, while a house may need its own. Ask how much storage the building has, and how recently it ran out. Private operators were due to take over distribution on 23 November 2026, with a 5% cut to the next adjustment set in the auction and a target of 99% water coverage by 2033.
Health plans and hospitals
This is what the money buys in Recife. The city has 11,531 hospital beds in the national register, against 38,439 in São Paulo and 21,500 in Rio de Janeiro. Real Hospital Português, IMIP, Hospital Santa Joana and the Unimed complex in Ilha do Leite are names to check against any plan's network. Public care exists at Hospital da Restauração and others. Most people in the apartment districts also carry a private plan, by general observation.
No price table for Recife turned up in the sources consulted. Bradesco BBI analysts projected 8.7% for individual plans at one big operator in 2026, and consultants projected 8% to 11% for collective plans, after 11.15% in 2025. Those rises run well above general inflation of about 4.86%. So a plan that looks affordable at 50 will be a much larger item at 65, and age bands jump. Get two quotes from a licensed broker, and if you are moving here, see the residency options as well.
School fees
The gap between ordinary and international is very wide. The QueroBolsa portal shows starting scholarship prices of R$ 140 to about R$ 850 a month at smaller Recife schools, with list prices up to R$ 1,890 on the listings shown. On Numbeo, the international primary figure is about R$ 59,724 a year, close to R$ 5,000 monthly. Escola Americana do Recife does not publish fees on the pages consulted, so ask them directly. In Graças, Damas, Vera Cruz, Agnes and Marista São Luís are the established names outside that tier, with Maria Auxiliadora in Derby. Budget also for material fees and a yearly rise.
Your choice of school should set your neighborhood. With Escola Americana in Boa Viagem and most of the older schools in the north, a daily crossing of the city at rush hour costs more in time than the rent gap saves. Parents in Casa Forte or Espinheiro often stay near the northern schools for that reason, as a general observation.
Food, restaurants and the calendar
Dieese's basic basket rose 6.97% in a single month in March 2026 on tomato prices, to R$ 654.62, then ended July with the smallest 12-month rise among the capitals that went up, at 0.74%. So short swings are large and yearly change is modest. Mid-range restaurants run about R$ 190 for two on Numbeo, and a simple meal R$ 28. Local markets help: the Mercado de Casa Amarela in the north, the Mercado da Madalena in the west, and organic fairs around the Praça de Casa Forte.
The city's own calendar moves prices less than you might expect, unless you are a guest. AirROI shows the average short-let rate near R$ 335 in February, with Carnival, and R$ 270 in September and October. Ordinary long-term rent does not swing that way, though asking rents have been rising steadily. If you are moving from abroad, plan on higher hotel costs for an inspection trip in the first two months of the year and lower ones from April to June. Currency matters too: at R$ 5.42 per dollar (Banco Central, 30 October 2026), a R$ 12,000 monthly budget is about US$ 2,200. Larger transfers for a purchase have their own page on sending money, and the main Recife guide covers housing and taxes in depth.
Questions about living costs in Recife
What does a couple need each month to live in Recife?
On the items here, about R$ 6,500 to R$ 9,000 a month without a car or school, renting a two-bedroom apartment. Buying instead takes out rent but leaves condominium, IPTU and upkeep.
Does Recife cost less than São Paulo or Rio?
How much does air-conditioning add?
No Recife-specific figure was found. Numbeo puts utilities for 85 m² at R$ 579.86, which we treat as a midpoint, and heavier use can push the total toward R$ 900 by our estimate.
Does Recife have water shortages?
Repairs have cut supply widely at times, including 134 neighborhoods across three municipalities for four days in July 2026. Ask about building tanks before you sign.
