Cost of living in Natal

What a household pays in Natal in late 2026, with the bills that run higher here: air conditioning, condominium fees in older large apartments and private schooling.

How you live

Monthly, in reais, for a couple. Untick what does not apply. Dollars at R$ 5.42. Sources are listed at the end of this page.

A month for a couple in two districts

These are our own sums from the published asking data and from Numbeo, a site built on user reports, so treat them as estimates. A couple renting a typical 70 m² apartment in Lagoa Nova would pay about R$ 2,500 in rent, then perhaps R$ 600 in condominium fee and IPTU together if the tenant carries them, R$ 500 for power, water and gas, and R$ 240 for internet and two phones. Groceries and a modest restaurant habit come to about R$ 2,000. Add bus passes or a car, and the month lands between R$ 6,000 and R$ 7,500, without health plans or school.

In Ponta Negra the rent is higher per meter but the apartment is smaller: 56 m² at about R$ 3,200 in the asking data. No average condominium fee is published. The total changes less than you might expect, because a smaller place uses less power. Owners rather than tenants should add a reserve for repairs, which as a general observation runs higher close to the sea.

Buying changes the picture. A Tirol owner of a large older apartment may pay R$ 2,500 monthly in fees alone, and those fees don't stop when the unit is empty. Since Natal's FipeZAP sale price is the lowest among this site's markets, the fees can feel high against the price paid, so run the sums before comparing with Recife or Fortaleza. Rent in Natal rose 16.51% in the latest FipeZAP year, so check that what you budget is current. Should you let the place out, the guide to rental tax applies.

The power bill and air conditioning

The climate leaves little choice. INMET's normals give daily highs of 28 °C to 31 °C and lows of 21 °C to 25 °C in every month of the year, so a bedroom unit runs most nights for people who want it cool. Numbeo's R$ 276.54 is its figure for basic utilities on 85 m², at moderate use. Our estimate of R$ 750 at the top end is for heavy use across several rooms. Ask for the last 12 Neoenergia Cosern bills, from the seller or the current tenant, since they show use across the seasons.

Tariffs moved up in 2026. Aneel, the federal regulator, approved an average 5.40% rise for Cosern on 22 April 2026, with 3.74% for low-voltage users, which covers homes. As a general observation, an apartment that catches the sea breeze and has shade in the afternoon needs far less cooling than a west-facing one on a low floor, and that difference shows up on the bill. Ask when the units were last serviced, since salt air is hard on equipment near the sea.

Water comes from Caern, the state company. No local tariff figure was confirmed. In some buildings water and gas are included in the condomínio, as in the Tirol listing above, so read the receipt before you add a separate line for them.

Health plans and named hospitals

A private plan is the budget's biggest unknown. No operator publishes a retail price list for Natal that we could read. The only local figure we could open is Unimed Natal's Potiguar Saúde offer from R$ 136.14 a month, for state and some municipal public servants, valid to 30 November 2026. It does not help most foreign buyers, but it does show a floor. Examples from São Paulo published by Neon in 2024 show basic plans for people aged 59 or older at about R$ 400 at small operators and from about R$ 670 to R$ 2,100 at larger ones. Plan prices climb by age bands written into each contract, so a 60-year-old should get a written quote early on.

Where you go matters as much as the plan. Hospital Rio Grande's emergency door in Tirol is at Rodrigues Alves 781, and it treats cardiac, oncology and neurosurgery patients. The federal Hospital Onofre Lopes in Petrópolis is a teaching hospital. Check that your plan covers the hospital you would want, not only that the name is on the card. Retirees weighing up Natal should visit one or two of these before buying, and read the residency guide on what permits come with what access.

School fees

Private school costs vary more than most other items here. The Melhor Escola site's first page of Natal results in late 2026 lists starting scholarship prices from R$ 160 a month to about R$ 1,016, averaging about R$ 425 by our count. Those are discounted rates and not full tuition. The site lists Colégio Marista on Rua Apodi, CEI on Rua Romualdo Galvão and Complexo Henrique Castriciano without fees, saying that they vary by grade, so ask each for the 2027 table.

Numbeo's users put what they call international primary school at R$ 18,000 to R$ 30,000 annually. We could not confirm a school in Natal that offers a foreign diploma, so ask about curriculum and accreditation before planning around one. Allow for registration fees, books and uniforms on top.

What changes with the season

Peak weeks affect a resident less than they do a host, but they do show up. AirROI has January as the top month for short-stay rates, with nightly prices above R$ 300 against an annual average of R$ 288, and its high season also takes in December and July. Restaurants and beach services around Ponta Negra are busiest then, and chair rental prices drew complaints during the summer of 2024 to 2025. A councilwoman reported charges of up to R$ 45.

The wet months have their own costs. June averages 349 mm of rain and drains back up in some streets. A tenant on a short contract may also find cheaper rates off season: AirROI's low months run from April to June, plus September and October, and owners often prefer a mid-term tenant then, as a general observation. Those moving here can try a low-season stay first and compare districts before signing anything longer.
