A couple's month in two neighborhoods
Take a couple renting a two-bedroom apartment and running no car. In Pituba the asking rent is about R$ 3,200, the fee perhaps R$ 900 and IPTU perhaps R$ 200, so housing runs near R$ 4,300 before utilities. In Barra the same size of apartment was asking about R$ 5,700 in 2025 and the fee is often higher, so housing can pass R$ 7,000. Add about R$ 3,500 for food, utilities, phones, some meals out and transport, and the month comes to about R$ 8,000 in Pituba and about R$ 10,500 in Barra, with no health plan or school. At R$ 5.42 to the dollar that is about US$ 1,500 and US$ 1,950.
The figures above are our estimates built from the published items in the table, and they will move with your habits. An apartment bought outright removes the rent line and leaves the fee, IPTU and maintenance, so owners should not count only what they saved on rent. Ownership in an old building can bring extra charges for facade and lift work, as described in the condominium fee guide.
Numbeo's November 2026 figures, based on 27 contributors and 335 entries over 12 months, set a one-bedroom in the center at R$ 2,889 and outside it at R$ 1,897, with a three-bedroom at R$ 5,203 and R$ 2,768. Those look low for the sea front, where asking data is higher. Use them as a floor for parts of the city, and use neighborhood rents for the coast.
Air conditioning and your electricity bill
Salvador's bill is shaped by humidity more than heat. INMET's normals show highs of about 31°C from January to March and only about 27°C in July, with nights that seldom drop below 21°C. In general, many residents run air conditioning in the bedroom at night all year, and in summer in the living room too. Neoenergia Coelba is the electricity distributor, and regulators approved a 3.93% average rise for residential customers on 22 April 2026. A flag surcharge is added on top in months when generation costs rise.
What drives your own bill is the unit type and hours. As a general observation, older window or wall units in an old building use a lot more power than recent inverter units, and a west-facing apartment in Barra or on the Corredor da Vitória takes the afternoon sun. Ask to see the seller's or landlord's last 12 power bills; it costs nothing and tells you more than a tour. Salt air also shortens the life of outdoor units on the Atlantic front, so count replacements in the running costs. Old wiring may not carry several new units at once, so ask an electrician before you buy new machines.
Health plans and named hospitals
Private cover is what most foreign residents in Salvador will want, and the choice of plan matters as much as the premium. Hospital Aliança and Hospital São Rafael belong to the D'Or network, Hospital Jorge Valente to the Promédica group, while Hospital Santa Izabel is run by the Santa Casa and Hospital Português is private. Public options include the Hospital Geral do Estado in Brotas and the university's HUPES. Check which hospitals a plan accepts and at what level, and do it before you sign any contract, since a low premium may cover only the operator's own network.
No published price list for Salvador was found. Older São Paulo examples from a consumer guide showed plans for the over-59s from about R$ 400 to about R$ 2,100 a month at the lower-cost and mid-range operators, and to more than R$ 10,000 for top Bradesco tiers. Prices rise steeply with age. Regulators capped individual-plan increases at 5.11% for the year from May 2026, though company and group plans are not capped in the same way. Ask a broker for a real quote using your age and a list of the hospitals you want. A 2021 survey quoted by The Rio Times found private clinic visits from R$ 80 to R$ 500, a useful sign of the range if you pay as you go.
School fees
For a family this is the line that changes the whole budget. The Correio's survey of September 2025 gives final-year fees of R$ 8,919 at Pan American, R$ 6,831 at Bernoulli, R$ 7,073 at Anchieta in Patamares and R$ 6,540 at its Pituba campus, R$ 5,597 at Módulo, R$ 3,700 at Antônio Vieira and R$ 1,813 at Lince. A consultancy expected rises averaging 9% in 2026. Pan American, which runs a Northern-style school year, calls its payments rateios, so ask for the full list of charges.
Younger children's fees are usually lower than the final-year numbers, but you should still check. Two children at a large Pituba school can cost R$ 11,000 to R$ 13,000 a month at final-year rates, which is more than the rent. Where you buy therefore follows from the school. The Salvador guide shows where these schools sit, and families often weigh Pituba against other planned districts such as Boa Viagem in Recife.
What changes with the season
Your cost of living does not swing much month to month, but a visitor's does. Airbtics' 12-month data shows January as the peak and March as the low, and hotel and short-let prices follow. Carnival rents in Barra were advertised at up to R$ 36,000 for the period in a 2026 headline. If you are renting while you look for a home, take a monthly furnished lease from March to June, and do not arrive in December without a booking. The seasonal rule in the Tenancy Law allows lets of up to 90 days.
Prices also shift by the year: FipeZAP's rent index rose 9.74% year on year in September 2026, ahead of inflation, while the city's bus fare rose 5.3% in January 2026 to R$ 5.90. IPTU comes due from February, and a single payment by 5 February earned 7% off in 2026. A foreign resident should also read the guide to sending money for what the exchange rate does to all of the above, since at R$ 5.42 to the dollar a 10% currency move changes your budget more than any single line above.
Other Northeast cities
Rent is the fairest comparison: FipeZAP's September 2026 figure is R$ 55.40 a square meter in Salvador, R$ 64.39 in Recife, R$ 45.71 in Natal and R$ 42.22 in Fortaleza.
