Cost of living in Rio de Janeiro

A couple's monthly budget in Rio in late 2026, where rent has outrun everything, the food basket is up 14% in a year and the neighborhood moves the total more than any lifestyle choice.

How you live

Monthly, in reais, for a couple. Untick what does not apply. Dollars at R$ 5.42. Sources are listed at the end of this page.

The neighborhood sets the budget

Housing decides the total in Rio. The same 60 m² apartment costs R$ 2,939 a month in rent and fee in Tijuca, R$ 5,496 in Botafogo, R$ 5,704 in Copacabana, R$ 5,965 in Barra, R$ 8,871 in Ipanema and R$ 9,094 in Leblon, on Data Secovi's model for September 2026. Those figures exclude IPTU, insurance and consumption. A couple's other costs change far less than that R$ 6,000 gap between the two ends, so pick the neighborhood first and work out everything else afterward.

Adding up the table for a couple with no children and no car in Copacabana, with mid-range choices, comes to between R$ 10,000 and R$ 13,000 monthly, about US$ 1,800 to US$ 2,400 at the October 2026 exchange rate. An owner subtracts the rent, adds IPTU and the fee, and pays a bigger condominium if the apartment is large; on a home of 150 m² in Copacabana, Secovi's December 2025 fee works out near R$ 2,100. That total is our estimate from the sources below, not a survey. A family with two children in an international school should add at least R$ 13,000 more.

A quick check against other markets: FipeZAP's citywide rent is R$ 61.86/m² in Rio, R$ 64.39/m² in Recife and R$ 55.40/m² in Salvador, so the gap at city level is small. Rio's difference lies in its prime neighborhoods, where Secovi's rent passes R$ 115/m².

Rent inflation and the food basket

Prices have moved quickly in the last two years, so an old blog figure is almost always too low. FipeZAP's city rent index ended September 2026 up 14.8% on the year. A July 2026 press report on QuintoAndar data put the citywide asking rent at R$ 51.60/m² in May 2026 against R$ 36.10 three years earlier, up 42.7%, while inflation in the same period was 14.9%. In the South Zone the climb is sharper still, as the market overview describes. If you plan to rent first and buy later, budget for an increase at the first renewal.

Food has also risen. Dieese priced the Rio basic basket, the fixed monthly food basket for one adult, at R$ 913.46 in September 2026, up 7.32% in one month and 14.29% in a year. Supermarkets around the South Zone, such as Zona Sul, tend to price above North Zone chains (an observation, not a survey), and a weekly street market can cut the fruit and vegetable bill. Restaurants have wide bands too: Numbeo's averages are R$ 45 for a cheap meal and R$ 200 for a three-course dinner for two, and Ipanema and Leblon's kitchens can pass that by a long way.

Power bills and air conditioning

Light, the distributor for the city, raised its average tariff 8.59% from 15 March 2026, with 6.40% on the residential tariff. A court order later pushed the index higher for a time before a federal appeals court reversed it, so check the latest bill and treat power as a rising cost. Numbeo's R$ 684 a month for utilities in an 85 m² apartment reflects an average user. INMET's forest station shows summer highs near 30°C, the beach plain runs hotter, and an apartment facing west on the Atlantic strip can run air conditioning most of the day from December to March.

As a general observation, old South Zone apartments often have window units on old wiring. A new air-conditioning install may need an electrician and approval from the building. Budget for that before you move in. Water and gas are smaller, but ask the building whether they are split by unit or shared in the fee, since an old shared meter means you pay for your neighbors' showers. How to read those bills is in the condominium accounts guide.

Health plans and named hospitals

Most foreign residents here buy a private plan. A guide that lists operators in Rio, with prices dating from 2024 updates, shows the first product of each at R$ 158 to R$ 520 a month for a person aged 29 to 33, and R$ 582 to R$ 1,865 for those aged 59 and over, mostly on shared-room coverage. Those are low-end products. A plan with Rede D'Or's hospitals in network, such as Copa D'Or or Barra D'Or, or with Clínica São Vicente, can cost more. Under national rules, the oldest age band may be charged up to six times the youngest, and the top band starts at 59, so a retiree should get real quotes before moving.

Check the network by address. A cheap plan may cover a local clinic and not the hospital four blocks from your home. Before signing, list the hospital you would want in an emergency and the specialist you already use, and ask the broker to confirm each one in writing. Anyone planning to live here should also read the residency routes, and ask each plan what documents it requires.

School fees and the seasons

School is the largest single item for a foreign family. The Swiss school's table for 2027 runs from about R$ 77,670 a year for preschool to R$ 126,975 for the final years, with a 5% discount for a second child. A guide places Escola Americana at the top of the local range, with British School mid-to-upper and Our Lady of Mercy below those two, and indicative tuition of US$ 12,000 to US$ 34,000 a year by level. Add enrollment fees, uniform, buses and school trips, and confirm each year's figures with admissions.

The seasons affect the budget too. Short lets get expensive from December to March, with AirROI's revenue per listing at its peak in February, so a house-hunting trip in January costs far more than one in May. IPTU falls due in February, with a 7% discount for a single payment, and it can feel like a large bill arriving on top of the holidays. Those who pay installments spread it over ten months. Condominium budgets typically go to a vote early in the year and special assessments arrive after that, so ask before you close whether one is coming. Purchase costs have their own guide to closing costs.
