How to read these numbers
Búzios has no official cost-of-living series. Numbeo, the crowd-sourced site, has a Búzios page, but it rests on 4 contributors over 18 months, was last updated in May 2025 and says some data are estimated, and its Cabo Frio page has only 8 contributors. So the utility, food and restaurant lines above lean on its figures for Rio de Janeiro, which come from 1,016 price entries by 99 people over 12 months. Numbeo puts Rio's monthly spending without rent at about R$ 3,365 for one person and R$ 12,043 for a family of four. Those are a starting point only. A resort of 40,006 people that fills with 160,000 visitors on a long weekend will not price like a metropolis, and it will vary more by month.
The housing lines are local but are asks, read from the Chaves na Mão portal on 3 November 2026. On those cards a tenant's monthly fee can come close to the rent: a small one-bedroom near Centro showed R$ 1,800 and then R$ 1,053 more in fees. Always add the two together, and see the Búzios guide for how the housing market works.
Put together, two people in a Rasa two-bedroom might budget about R$ 2,500 of rent, R$ 684 of utilities, R$ 169 for internet and mobile, about R$ 1,060 for groceries and R$ 360 for meals out, plus a car. That comes to around R$ 5,800 with the fuel line above, and it is an illustration built from the lines above and not a measured figure. The same couple in a three-bedroom gated house in Geribá adds several thousand reais in rent and fee before anything else changes.
Heat, power cuts and water
Highs average around 30 to 32 °C from December to March at the nearest full INMET station, Iguaba Grande, and lows stay near 23 °C, so most people will run air conditioning in the bedrooms in those months. Sea breeze helps on an exposed lot and does less for a house tucked behind a hill or a wall. From May to September, highs of 26 to 27 °C mean you may not need it at all. A house's bill can therefore swing widely through the year, and pool pumps add a steady load in every month.
The bigger issue may be reliability. Enel, the power company, faced a Procon claims session in January 2026 after what the city's consumer office described as constant outages and voltage swings over the New Year period, with one councilwoman reporting a burned television. Supply of water failed in the same weeks, and a state court has since ordered Prolagos to send free tanker water when supply fails. So it is sensible to budget for surge protection, a larger water tank and perhaps a small generator as one-off costs if you plan to live or let here. Those are the costs a cheap rent or a tidy listing hides.
Sewer connection can also bring a bill. Where the separate network passes, connecting is mandatory. Check how condominium accounts treat shared systems if you are in a gated group, since a private treatment unit or pump is often part of the fee.
Health plans and hospitals
Public care means the municipal hospital, Dr. Rodolpho Perissé, in São José. A scanner and lab wing was going up there in 2026, with a polyclinic planned across the road. Until those open, some tests mean a drive.
Private cover usually means Unimed Cabo Frio, which serves Búzios, Arraial do Cabo, Cabo Frio and São Pedro da Aldeia. Its authorization office is in Cabo Frio, and its January 2025 guide lists Hospital Santa Izabel in Passagem, a hospital in São Pedro da Aldeia and a clinical department on the avenue in Búzios. Its plans come in local, state and national coverage, and that choice matters if you also spend time in Rio. No price table is published, and no figure for the Lagos region could be found, so this budget has no health line. Ask for a quote by age on (22) 2647-8080, and compare other insurers. Individual plans renewing in the year from May 2026 are capped at a 5.11% rise by the national regulator, ANS, as the cooperative's own page reports. Plans bought through a company are not covered by that cap, as a general observation, so check which you are offered.
Foreign residents should also read the residency guide, since your status can affect which plans will sell to you.
School fees
Few private schools publish their fees, so these figures come from directories. Quero Bolsa showed R$ 300.20 at Escola Mundo Encantado do Saber in Caravelas and R$ 903.44 at Instituto Santa Rosa in Manguinhos, both after its own discount, and left the rest blank. Melhor Escola gave Santa Rosa's list price for middle school as R$ 1,204.58 monthly. Add enrollment, books and uniform. Ask each school directly, as these directories sell scholarships and their figures may be stale.
Nothing in those listings points to a bilingual or international program. A family needing English-language schooling should price online study or private tutors, or look at a larger market such as Barra da Tijuca. That is an expensive gap, so it may decide whether the family lives here all year.
What changes between January and June
No one publishes a seasonal price index for the town, so most of this is what the numbers imply. Airbtics shows demand peaking in January and at its weakest in June, and hotels ran at about 95% in January 2026. Rents on seasonal contracts follow that curve. So a tenant who signs a lease in winter may be asked to leave or pay more before summer. A seasonal contract cannot pass 90 days and can demand all its rent up front, so ask for a proper annual lease if you are staying the year.
Traffic is a cost too. Weekend tolls on ViaLagos cost about two-thirds more per axle than midweek ones in the August 2025 table, so a weekend trip from Rio costs more just to get here. Fuel and time on the avenue rise along with the crowd. City hall's fee for tour vehicles and its landing charge fall on visitors rather than residents, and a broader tourism fee proposed in 2025 was archived that November.
Working people feel the opposite swing: jobs and tips peak in summer and thin out in winter. If you hire help or depend on local trades, expect them to be busy in December and easier to book in June, when building work also gets its driest weather. Owners should plan repairs for that window. Yearly taxes are covered in our note on ITBI and IPTU.
Questions about living costs in Búzios
How much do I need to live in Búzios each month?
A couple in a Rasa rental might spend around R$ 5,800 before health cover and school on figures built from local asks and Rio averages. A gated house in Geribá adds thousands. No reliable measured local figure exists.
Is Búzios more expensive than Rio?
Housing asks are lower than Rio's top neighborhoods in many parts but rise sharply on the beaches, and no one publishes a direct comparison. Expect resort pricing in Centro in January and calmer prices elsewhere.
How much is a health plan in Búzios?
No published table exists for the Lagos region. Unimed Cabo Frio covers the town and takes sales calls on (22) 2647-8080, and ANS capped individual plan rises at 5.11% for this year's renewals.
What does a maid or caretaker cost?
Portal Salário's national range for a domestic worker is R$ 1,670 to R$ 2,431 a month, and R$ 1,978 is the Southeast average, before social charges. Large houses may need a caretaker and gardener too, and an accountant can set up the registration.
Are utilities reliable?
Not always at peak. Water and power both failed around New Year 2026, and the city's consumer office took complaints. Budget for a tank and surge protection.
