Cost of living in Jericoacoara

No local price survey exists, so these budgets rest on Fortaleza data, state tariffs and travel prices, with our estimates labeled and sand freight on top.

How you live

Monthly, in reais, for a couple. Untick what does not apply. Dollars at R$ 5.42. Sources are listed at the end of this page.

Why these figures are mostly estimates

Numbeo, the usual crowd-sourced reference, has no page for Jericoacoara or Jijoca. So this page takes its unit prices from Fortaleza, the nearest city with enough data, and adds what is known about the village: most goods cross sand, no bank branch or ATM operates in the village, and the visitor economy sets the price of a restaurant meal. Every item above says whether it is a sourced price or our estimate. Allow more for full-time life in the village, and less in Jijoca town, where shops are more numerous.

Adding up the lows above gives about R$ 5,000 monthly for two adults sharing a rented home with two bedrooms and one health plan, and the highs about R$ 16,500, both before any domestic help. Most households will land between those. These are our own sums and have not been tested against a real household, so ask two residents and a local broker before relying on them.

Power, water and the fixed charges

Electricity comes from Enel Ceará. Regulators approved an average rise of 5.78% in April 2026, reported at 4.67% for homes, and the consumer council expected a cut of about 5% from September. So check the most recent bill, not one from early in the year. Our general read is that air conditioning decides most of it.

Two local items surprise newcomers. The municipal street-lighting contribution appears in bands by use: nothing up to 100 kWh a month for a home, 5.69% at 251 to 300 kWh, 12.19% at 301 to 400 kWh, and 24% above 500 kWh, under a 2017 law. A pousada on the non-residential table pays up to 38.61%. The law page we read does not say what the percentage applies to, so read it off a real bill. The tourist fee also touches daily life: R$ 41.50, good for 10 days, on any visiting friend or relative aged 13 to 60, with an exemption for residents and for workers who show proof at the post.

Water is the bigger question. All of it comes from the groundwater, and a published study found nitrate well above the limit, as the hub explains. Budget for delivered drinking water or a filter if a test gives you any doubt. Cagece's published average tariff was R$ 6.29 per m³ in August 2024, and we could not open a 2026 table.

Health plans and the distance problem

The cost of a health plan matters less than what it reaches. In the village you have the public emergency unit, and in Jijoca the municipality's other public services. Serious cases head for the state capital, four to six hours away by road and sand. No private hospital was found closer in our sources, so check what your plan's network covers and whether it pays for transfers.

Hapvida is one of the two largest group-plan operators in Ceará, with about 965,570 people on such plans. Its average rise of 12.28% in 2026, a company-wide figure, is a reminder that group contracts are not capped the way individual ones are. Individual and family plans rose by up to 5.11% for contract years starting in May 2026. Older buyers should ask for written quotes by age band, and foreign retirees should check their home cover abroad, because nothing here replaces a plan that works in Fortaleza. For staying long term, read the guide to residency routes.

Children and schools

Families face a short list. Public schools are free. In Jijoca, EEEP Sandra Carvalho Costa teaches about 520 high school students, and we found no international school in the municipality. A family that needs private schooling is looking at the state capital and should budget for a second home there. That is why this page shows school fees as zero, which is not the same as saving money.

City fees for vehicles and trade

Anyone running a tourist vehicle or small business pays into the municipal fee tables, set in UFIRM. A tourist transport permit costs 25 units per vehicle a year under a 2018 law. Red-plate licensing adds 30 units for a truck, 25 for a bus or shared van, 20 for a taxi and 10 for a motorcycle taxi under a 2021 law. Street events on public ground pay 1 unit per square meter a day. Ask the finance office for the current UFIRM, since none of the laws we read states its value.

Seasonal swings and supply

Prices move with the calendar more than in a city. Visitor demand peaked in July 2026, with AirROI's average nightly rate at R$ 471 against R$ 362 in April. As a general observation, restaurants, transfers and services follow that curve, and a resident can plan big purchases and building work for the quiet months of March to May. Rain falls heaviest then, however, so it suits indoor work.

Getting around has its own budget. A shuttle truck between Jijoca and the village was quoted at about R$ 20 a person on an undated guide, a private transfer from the regional airport at about R$ 250 on the same guide, whose airport text dates from 2017-18, and a Fortaleza 4x4 transfer at about R$ 700 private or R$ 200 shared in November 2022. All of these will have risen. A village resident registers a vehicle with the city under a 2019 law, or uses the public lot if there is no garage. For everyone else the outside lot costs R$ 40 a day under a 2020 law, up from R$ 10 in the 2010 text and R$ 20 in 2019.

If the budget or the hospital distance is the deciding factor, compare Natal's costs, or a stay in Camocim, where a full town offers more everyday choice. For the costs of buying, not living, the hub prices one at R$ 1,000,000 line by line, and the national guide to closing costs explains each line.

Questions about living costs in Jericoacoara

How much does it cost to live in Jericoacoara?

On our own estimates, between about R$ 5,000 and R$ 16,500 monthly for two people renting a two-bedroom, before domestic help. No local survey exists to test this.

Is there a rent index for Jericoacoara?

No. FipeZAP does not cover it and Numbeo has no page. Ask local brokers for signed leases on similar streets.

Do residents pay the tourist fee?

Residents of Jijoca are exempt, as are workers with proof of a job in the village, under-13s, over-60s and disabled visitors, on rules reported in 2026.

Are there international schools nearby?

We found none in the municipality. Fortaleza is the place to look, and the distance makes daily attendance impossible from here.
